Spaced Repetition for Math: How Mathy Works
Spaced repetition means returning to learned material after a delay. Mathy organizes review on your device to help you recall math facts and formulas you’ve already learned.
What spacing and retrieval mean
Spacing separates practice occasions instead of concentrating every attempt in one sitting. Retrieval means trying to bring an answer to mind before looking it up. A spaced session may involve retrieval, but the two ideas are distinct.
The What Works Clearinghouse study guide recommends spacing learning and using quizzes to revisit key content. Mathematics includes facts, concepts, procedures and applications; evidence for one kind of material should not be treated as an identical effect for every other kind.
What the research does and does not establish
Learning research provides reasons to revisit content and attempt recall. It does not supply one universally best interval or prove that a particular app’s scheduler improves all mathematical abilities. Mathy has not established a product-specific learning outcome through a clinical or classroom efficacy trial.
The mathematical-procedures study linked below did not find a robust distributed-practice advantage in its setting. This helps explain why we separate general study principles from claims about every math task. Use recall practice alongside instruction, worked solutions and application problems.
Start with material you understand
Select a topic whose relationships you can explain, even if recalling them is still slow. A correct response with effort can be a useful starting point. An unfamiliar concept needs teaching and worked examples before speed becomes a sensible goal.
The public examples let you inspect the scope without recording an attempt. Revealing an example answer does not schedule a review or affect your saved progress. Start opens the selected topic’s real practice flow.
How Mathy uses your responses
Mathy keeps practice local and records responses through its existing learning policy. Correctness and eligible response timing contribute according to the task’s policy; not every task is assessed against the same speed expectation. Pausing and assistance have their own handling.
Reviews can move farther apart as the corresponding recall evidence strengthens. Mathy chooses practice from the available selected scope instead of promising that each visible example will appear next. The scheduler’s exact choice is part of the app, not something this guide overrides.
Practice without making it a quota
Use a session that fits your day and return later. Optional extra practice remains optional. A missed day is a reason to resume when convenient, not evidence that a topic must be restarted from zero.
Choose your regular practice topics in the app. Starting a topic from the website keeps your usual selection. From a course or collection, choose a topic to start its own practice session.
Your device owns the history
No account is required for local practice. Browsers and the iOS app keep their own local data. Without optional iCloud sync enabled in the iOS app, switching devices does not automatically share your review history. Use the existing backup tools when you need to preserve or move supported local data.
These pages can explain a topic without opening learning storage. The website language follows its URL and content. Browsing does not change your app’s language or learning preferences.
